What is an HS Code?

An HS code, or Harmonized System code, is an internationally used numerical code that is used to classify products for customs and statistical purposes. The system was developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and is used by more than 200 countries worldwide.

Each HS code consists of eight digits that categorize products based on their nature and function. These codes help identify products at the border, determine import duties and collect trade statistics. The first two digits of an HS code indicate the chapters, the next two digits the sub-chapters, and the last two digits the sub-categories.

When do you need an HS code?

When your pallet shipment goes through customs. Within the European Union there is free movement of goods, so this is not necessary. If you are shipping outside the European Union, your shipment will go through customs. This HS code appears on a customs invoice that you add to shipments from or to countries outside the European Union.

Customs uses the HS code to calculate the amount of import duties. In addition, the HS code helps to correctly classify your goods, so that no misunderstandings or delays arise. By using the correct HS code, you ensure smooth handling of your shipments, avoid extra costs and benefit from possible advantages of trade agreements. It is a small step that offers many benefits and makes your international shipments much easier.

Why should you put an HS code on the invoice?

Including an HS code on your invoice is important and makes your shipping experience much smoother. With the correct HS code, customs authorities ensure that your goods are processed quickly and without hassle, so you don't experience any delays. It also helps to accurately calculate import duties and taxes, avoiding surprises and extra costs.

Furthermore, you ensure that you comply with all customs regulations and benefit from advantages of trade agreements, such as lower rates. By using HS codes, you make the logistics process more efficient and deliver a top service to your customers. In short, a small effort with great benefits.
